In the early 1960’s the USAF began “Operation Look Alike”. All aircraft needed to look
alike but they couldn’t decide which camo pattern. So they ordered all special unit
markings removed and natural metal aircraft to be painted with a silver lacquer. Aircraft
61-0183 was one of eighty F-105D-25-RE series that was equipped with conventional
warfare modifications. On July 6, 1973, 61-0183 was sent to MASDC (Military Aircraft
Storage & Disposition Center) for storage as #FK0001 and was scrapped in 1984.

In 1963 Lockheed delivered three purpose-built single seat F-104G Starfighter's to NASA and re-designated them F-104N. Tail numbers were 011, 012 and 013. On June 8, 1966 the second North American XB-70A Valkyrie was on a public advertising photo shoot with 013 as chase plane. Speculation is 013 was flipped over by the vortices of the massive XB-70A and sheered off both Valkyrie vertical stabilizers. The F104N immediately burst into flames killing the test pilot. The Valkyrie also crashed killing its co-pilot.

In June 1959 West Germany’s first jet fighter unit was formed as Jagdgeschwader 71 (JG
71 – Fighter Wing 71). The Geschwaderkommodore (equivalent of Group Commander or
Wing Commander) was the highest-scoring fighter pilot of all time Erich Hartmann. JG 71
originally was based at ex-RAF base Ahlhorn but in 1961 it transferred to Wittmund. April
21 1961 was the 43rd anniversary of the death of “The Red Baron” Manfred Von
Richthofen and the unit was given the honorary title of “Richthofen”. JG 71 received the
first F-4F Phantom II in 1974 that were used as Fighter/Bomber/Attack but in 1988
became strictly a Fighter Wing. The F-4F is due to be decommissioned by 2012 when
they are replaced by the Eurofighter Typhoon.

In the spring of 2003 they were sent as part of a 30 Harrier pool to take part in “Operation Telic”, the British name for “Iraqi Freedom”. They were stationed at Ahmed al Jaber Air Base and were tasked with close air support and reconnaissance duties. Another role the Harriers were given was the destruction of Iraqi mobile Scud launchers.

Models added to the 1st are $1.80 each for shipping.

On 15 December 1943, VOF-1 was formed and in mid-August 1944 joined Allied
Forces for the invasion of Southern France named “Anvil-Dragoon”. The operation was
designed to act like a giant pincer and cut off enemy forces still in Western Europe. Air
support was provided by Royal Navy carriers as well as two from the USN carrying the
only Hellcats to see operations in the ETO. One USN flattop was the USS Tulagi with
F6F aircraft of VOF-1 (Observation Fighter) Squadron 1 on board. VOF-1 was specially
trained to target spot for the naval guns during the pre-landing barrage for an
amphibious landing. The pilot would locate an enemy gun and relay the information to
the Allied ships that would then fire at this target. If the target was missed the pilot
would then provide information to his gunners who would make the necessary
corrections. Along with the target spotting the VOF-1 managed to down 6 German
aircraft with Ens. Edward W. Olszewski and Ens. Albert R. Wood each scoring two
while flying “white 8”.

VF-84 was known as “Wolf Gang and was established on May 1, 1944. Most of its
members were former VF-17 “Jolly Rogers” and the Commanding Officer was Lt. Cdr.
Roger Hedrick the former XO of VF-17. Because so many members were ex “Jolly
Rogers” Hedrick tried to have VF-84 bare the name but was refused and during 1944-
1945 VF-84 was called “Wolf Gang”. VF-84 took part in the final assaults on the
Japanese at Iwo Jima, raids on Tokyo, the destruction of the Yamato, Okinawa. The
squadron was disestablished October 8 1945.
