The Lavochkin La-5 was a Soviet fighter aircraft of World War II. It was a development and refinement of the LaGG-3 and was one of the Soviet Air Force's most capable types of warplane. The La-5's heritage began even before the outbreak of war, with the LaGG-1, a promising yet underpowered aircraft – turning a full circle, for example, took 20 seconds. The LaGG-3 was a modification of that design that attempted to correct this by both lightening the airframe and fitting a more powerful engine. Nevertheless, this was not enough, and the lack of power remained a significant problem. In early 1942, two of the LaGG-1 and -3's designers, Semyon Lavochkin and Vladimir Gorbunov, attempted to correct this deficiency by experimentally fitting a LaGG-3 with the more powerful Shvetsov ASh-82 radial engine. Since the LaGG-3 was powered by an inline engine, they accomplished this by grafting on the nose section of a Sukhoi Su-2 (which used this engine). By now, the shortcomings of the LaGG-3 had caused Lavochkin to fall out of Stalin's favour, and factories previously assigned to LaGG-3 construction had been turned over to building the rival Yakovlev Yak-1 and Yak-7. The design work required to adapt the LaGG-3 to the new engine and still maintain the aircraft's balance was undertaken by Lavochkin in a small hut beside an airfield over the winter of 1941-1942, all completely unofficially. When the prototype took flight in March, the result was extremely pleasing - the fighter finally had a powerplant that allowed it to perform as well in the air as it had been supposed to on paper. After flying, the LaG-5 (the change in name reflecting that one of the original LaGG designers was no longer with the programme), Air Force test pilots declared it superior to the Yak-7, and intensive flight tests began in April. After only a few weeks, the design was modified further, cutting down the rear fuselage to give the pilot better visibility. By July, Stalin ordered maximum-rate production of the aircraft, now simply known as the La-5 and the conversion of any incomplete LaGG-3 airframes to the new configuration. While still inferior to the best German fighters at high altitudes, the La-5 proved to be every bit their match closer to the ground. With most of the air combat over the Eastern Front taking place at altitudes of under 5,000 m (16,400 ft), the La-5 was very much in its element. Its rate of roll was excellent.

The Grumman F8F Bearcat (affectionately called "Bear") was an American single-engine naval fighter aircraft of the 1940s. It went on to serve into the mid-20th Century in the United States Navy and other air forces, and would be the company's final piston engined fighter aircraft. Designed for the interceptor fighter role, the design team's aim was to create the smallest, lightest fighter that could fit around the Pratt & Whitney R2800 engine (carried over from the F6F Hellcat). Compared to its predecessor, the Bearcat was 20% lighter, had a 30% better rate of climb and was 50 mph (80 km/h) faster. It was also considerably smaller in size, as it was designed to be operated from small escort aircraft carriers, something the big Hellcat rarely did. Thus the F8F Bearcat was intended mainly as a replacement for the obsolete FM2 Wildcat, still the mainstay fighter of the many wartime escort carriers.

VF-6 Squadron was formed when VF-1B and VF-8B merged on July 1, 1937. VF-6 was one of the first to receive the new Grumman F3F-3. The F3F series was affectionately nicknamed “The Flying Barrel” and was considered very ugly but it didn’t take long for people to see the beauty of the entire package. At the time VF-6 was assigned to the USS Enterprise that painted her aircraft blue for ease of identification. The last F3F-3 was flown by VMF-211 on October 10, 1941. On July 15, 1943 VF-6 (Shooting Stars) swapped designations with VF-3 (Felix the Cat Squadron) and this was the beginning of a 3 year feud. Both squadrons claimed Felix as their mascot until November 1946 when VF-6 was decommissioned.

In 1963 Lockheed delivered three purpose-built single seat F-104G Starfighter's to NASA and re-designated them F-104N. Tail numbers were 011, 012 and 013. On June 8, 1966 the second North American XB-70A Valkyrie was on a public advertising photo shoot with 013 as chase plane. Speculation is 013 was flipped over by the vortices of the massive XB-70A and sheered off both Valkyrie vertical stabilizers. The F104N immediately burst into flames killing the test pilot. The Valkyrie also crashed killing its co-pilot.

The 2004 NATO “Tiger Meet” was held in Schleswig-Jagel, Germany. The gathering started in 1959 as a social event but developed into an almost annual invitational opportunity to test flying operations and exchange of techniques. One team present was also one of the oldest Tiger Association members; it was the French Armee de’l Air EC 1/12 “Cambresis”. This is the same squadron that had hosted the 2003 meeting. The aircraft sent to represent them was Mirage 2000RDI 97/12-YT. The aircraft received this simple but striking paint scheme while using the basic camouflage colors.

The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-15 was a jet fighter developed for the USSR by Artem Mikoyan and Mikhail Gurevich. The MiG-15 was one of the first successful swept-wing jet fighters, and it achieved fame in the skies over Korea, where early in the war, it outclassed all enemy fighters. The MiG-15 also served as the starting point for development of the more advanced MiG-17 which would oppose American fighters over Vietnam in the 1960s. The MiG-15 is believed to have been one of the most numerous jet aircraft ever made, with over 12,000 built. Licensed foreign production perhaps raised the total to over 18,000. The Mig-15 is often mentioned along with the F-86 Sabre in lists of the best fighter aircraft of the Korean War and in comparison with fighters of other eras.

A-10A Thunderbolt II, 917th TFW, "Peanut" diecast model aircraft HA1303 1:72In order to develop better camouflage for Desert Storm , the USAF tested two experimental paint schemes of the A-10 in 1991. One of the A-10's from 917th TFG (47th TFS) at Barksdale AFB was selected. It was known as the "Peanut" because of its special brown paint scheme (the other was known as the "Flipper" with a similar grey scheme). Both schemes were not adopted. Finally the aircraft were repainted in the usual grey but never went to Desert Storm. From 1993 to 1996, based at Aviano Air Base in Italy , the 47th flew 501 sorties as part of the NATO peacekeeping effort in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

In 1941 the Nakajima B5N2 Kate was getting old and a new more up to date torpedo bomber was needed. With Japan’s entry into WWII it meant the Kate would have to continue to be the main Japanese bomber for another 3 years until the B6N “Jill” was ready. Even though the Kate was old it managed to sink more Allied ships than any other Japanese torpedo bomber. Once replaced many Kates were modified to serve as maritime reconnaissance.
