Kawasaki Ki-61 Hien (roughly "flying swallow") was a Japanese
World War II fighter aircraft used by the Imperial Japanese Army Air
Force. The Allied code name assigned by the United States War Department
was "Tony". The Japanese Army designation was "Army Type
3 Fighter". It was the only mass-produced Japanese fighter of the

The Veltro is considered by many to be
the best Italian fighter in World War II. But, it was too late to do any
good for Italy as only a small number were in service at the time of the
Sicily landings and three months later, the Italians surrendered. It was
said that in the hands of a good pilot, it could defeat any Allied
plane.

Blackburn Skua was a naval combat aircraft operated by the British Fleet
and served as a dive-bomber and fighter. It was metal construction and
their first service monoplane. Its retractable undercarriage and
enclosed cockpit were also new to a service that was primarily equipped
still with open cockpit biplanes such as the Fairey Swordfish.
Performance for the fighter role was compromised by the aircraft's low
speed and relative lack of power. But the aircraft's armament of four
fixed wing machine-guns and a single rearward-firing weapon. For
dive-bombing, a single 500-lb bomb was carried. It took its name from
the seabird Skua.

The Yakovlev Yak-9 was a single-engine fighter
aircraft used by the Soviet Union in World War II. It was the most
numerous Soviet fighter of the war. Yak-9 first saw combat in late 1942
during the Battle of Stalingrad.
